1. Tripod Legs: Flip vs Twist

A tripod, as its name implies, has three legs. The legs are generally collapsible, telescoping up and down to adjust its maximum height. You can secure them in place with one of two systems: twist-lock or flip-lock.

Flip locks are much quicker to set up and disassemble than twist locks – you just need to snap the flip-leg lock back into place.

In comparison, you have to twist each leg several times to secure twist locks. If you’re using your tripod on the go or simply want a more convenient way to lock it in place, go with a quick-release flip-lock system.

Another thing to consider is the number of leg sections. More sections means a taller tripod, but it can also mean a less stable tripod. In addition to being more stable, a tripod with fewer leg sections also tends to be sturdier.
